The Moroccan Trellis Throw: An Easy and Beautiful Interlocking Crochet Pattern

Inspired by the stunning, textured stitch featured in the video “🙋‍♀️My grandmother taught me this beautiful stitch! A very easy and beautiful crochet pattern” by WooL Work, this pattern creates a dense yet flexible fabric with a lovely repeating fan and trellis design. We call this the Moroccan Trellis Stitch for its rich, interlocking appearance that resembles geometric tilework.

This pattern is written for a versatile Medium Throw Blanket size, but the simple repeat can be adapted for any project, from scarves to sweaters.

Stitch Multiple: Chain a multiple of 10 + 2 for the foundation row.

Part 1: The Moroccan Trellis Stitch Pattern

The throw is worked flat, back and forth in rows. The pattern is built on a 4-Row Repeat that creates two layers of interlocking fans.

Step 1: Foundation Chain

Chain a multiple of 10 + 2. For a 50-inch wide throw, try Chain 122 (12 repeats of 10 + 2).

Row 1 (Base Row):

  1. DC in the 4th Ch from hook (Ch 3 counts as 1st DC) and DC in each Ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Step 2: The 4-Row Repeat

Row 2 (Fan Layer 1 – Placement):

  1. SC in the first DC.
  2. Ch 2, Sk 4 DC.
  3. *Work Fan (7 DC) into the next DC. Sk 4 DC. SC in the next DC. Ch 2, Sk 4 DC.
  4. Rep from * across, ending the final repeat with: Fan (7 DC) in the next DC, Sk 4 DC, SC in the last DC (the top of the Ch 3 turning chain). Ch 3 (counts as 1st DC), turn.

(Stitch Count Check: The end of this row should have a pattern of Fan, Sk 4, SC.)

Row 3 (Reset Row – Foundation for Layer 2):

  1. DC in the first Ch-2 Sp (the space created by the Ch 2 from R2).
  2. DC in the next 7 DC (the top of the Fan).
  3. *DC in the next Ch-2 Sp. DC in the next SC. DC in the next Ch-2 Sp. DC in the next 7 DC (the Fan).
  4. Rep from * across, ending the final repeat with: DC in the last Ch-2 Sp, DC in the last SC. Ch 1, turn.

(Stitch Count Check: The stitch count should match the DC count from Row 1.)

Row 4 (Fan Layer 2 – Offset):

This row positions the fans between the fans of Row 2, creating the interlocking effect.

  1. SC in the first DC.
  2. Ch 2, Sk 4 DC.
  3. *Work Fan (7 DC) into the next DC (This DC should be directly above the SC from Row 2).

(Stitch Count Check: This row should look exactly like Row 2, but the fans are offset by 5 stitches from the start of the row.)

Row 5 (Reset Row – Foundation for Layer 1 Repeat):

  1. DC in the first Ch-2 Sp.
Ch 1, turn.

Repeat: Continue alternating the 4-row repeat: Row 2, Row 3, Row 4, Row 5 until the blanket reaches your desired length (approximately 60 inches or more).

Part 3: Edging and Finishing

Final Row (Straight Edge)

End the pattern after completing a Row 4 repeat (a Fan Row). This ensures the bottom and top edges are mirrored.

  1. Ch 3 (counts as 1st DC), turn.
  2. Work DC in the first Ch-2 Sp.
  3. DC in the next 7 DC (the Fan).
  4. *DC in the next Ch-2 Sp. DC in the next SC. DC in the next Ch-2 Sp. DC in the next 7 DC (the Fan).
  5. Rep from * across, ending with: DC in the last Ch-2 Sp, DC in the last SC. Fasten off.

Optional Border (Simple Garter Edge)

For a clean finish, work an easy border around the entire blanket.

  1. Rejoin yarn to any corner. Ch 1, SC evenly around the entire perimeter. Work 3 SC in each corner. Sl St to the Beg SC.
  2. Round 2 (HDC Rib): Ch 2 (does not count as St). Work HDC in the Back Loop Only (BLO) of every SC around for a simple, flexible ribbed border. Sl St to the first HDC to join.
  3. Fasten off and weave in all ends securely using a tapestry needle.

Finishing:

  • Blocking: While optional for bulky yarn, a light steam block can help even out tension and enhance the drape of the fans.

Your Moroccan Trellis Throw is now ready to snuggle under!
