The Cloud Bloom Baby Blanket: An Easy, Textured Crochet Pattern

Inspired by the “EASY Crochet Pattern for Beginners!” tutorial by WooL Work, this pattern features a simple yet elegant stitch that creates a textured, plush fabric with a beautiful drape. We call this the Cloud Bloom Stitch because the repeating blocks resemble soft, puffy floral clusters nestled in a delicate mesh. This two-row repeat is highly relaxing and perfect for large projects like baby blankets, scarves, or wraps.

This pattern is written for a versatile Standard Receiving/Stroller Baby Blanket size.

Part 1: The Cloud Bloom Stitch Pattern

The blanket is worked flat, back and forth in rows. The pattern is based on a 2-Row Repeat.

Step 1: Foundation Chain

Chain a multiple of 3 + 2 for the desired width.

For a 36-inch wide blanket, Chain 107 (35 repeats of 3, plus 2).

Row 1 (Foundation):

  1. SC in the 2nd Ch from hook and in each Ch across. Ch 3 (counts as 1st DC), turn. (106 SC)

Row 2 (Mesh Setup – DC & Chain):

  1. DC in the first SC (same stitch as Ch 3).
  2. *Ch 1, Sk 1 SC, DC in the next SC.
  3. Rep from * across, ending with: Ch 1, Sk 1 SC, DC in the last SC. Ch 1, turn.(You will have 53 DC and 52 Ch-1 spaces.)

Row 3 (Cloud Bloom Block):

This is the textured row where the “blooms” are formed.

  1. SC in the first DC.
  2. *Work 3 DC into the next Ch-1 Sp. SC into the next DC.
  3. Rep from * across, ending with: 3 DC into the last Ch-1 Sp, SC into the top of the turning Ch 3. Ch 3 (counts as 1st DC), turn.(You should have 53 SC and 52 DC from the clusters/blocks.)

Row 4 (Mesh Setup Repeat):

This row resets the spacing, preparing for the next block row.

  1. DC in the first SC (same stitch as Ch 3).
  2. *Ch 1, Sk 1 DC, DC in the next DC.
  3. Ch 1, Sk 1 DC, DC in the next SC (This is the center SC of the previous row’s cluster).
  4. Rep from * across, ending with: Ch 1, Sk 1 DC, DC into the top of the turning Ch 1. Ch 1, turn.

Row 5 (Cloud Bloom Block Repeat):

This row is worked exactly like Row 3.

  1. SC in the first DC.
  2. *Work 3 DC into the next Ch-1 Sp. SC into the next DC.
  3. Rep from * across, ending with: 3 DC into the last Ch-1 Sp, SC into the top of the turning Ch 3. Ch 3 (counts as 1st DC), turn.

Step 3: Continuing the Blanket Body

Repeat Rows 4 and 5 until the blanket measures approximately 40 inches long, or your desired length, ending on a Row 5 repeat (a Cloud Bloom Block row).

Part 2: Final Edge and Border

To finish the blanket with a clean, stable edge, we will work one final row and a simple border.

Final Row (SC Stabilizer)

End after a Row 5 (Block Row).

  1. Ch 1, turn. SC in the first SC.
  2. SC in the next 3 DC. SC in the next SC.
  3. Rep Step 2 across, ensuring you have one SC in every DC and SC from the previous row. (106 SC)
  4. Fasten off if changing colors for the border, or Sl St to the Beg SC to start the border.

Border (Simple HDC Edge)

  1. Round 1 (HDC): Ch 2 (does not count as St). HDC evenly around all four sides of the blanket.
    • Work 3 HDC into each of the four corners.
    • On the side edges (working into the row ends), work 2 HDC for every DC row end, and 1 HDC for every SC row end, or simply place them evenly to prevent puckering or rippling.
  2. Sl St to the top of the Beg Ch 2 to join.
  3. Round 2 (Reverse SC/Crab Stitch – Optional): Ch 1, SC backward (working from left to right for right-handers) into each HDC around. This creates a ropelike edge. Sl St to the Beg SC.

Finishing:

  • Fasten off yarn and weave in all ends securely using a tapestry needle.
  • Blocking (Optional): Lightly block the blanket using steam or a wet method to relax the fibers and even out the drape.
